What is a turbocharger?

A supercharger is a rotary machine that consists of a turbine and a compressor fixed on a shaft. It is used to charge an internal combustion engine and a steam boiler. The turbine is charged with the engine fumes while the compressed air powers the engine. More air enters the cylinder which results in more engine power and higher compression which in turn makes the gear more efficient.

Already in the 1880ties Rudolf Diesel tried to transfer compressed air to the combustion chamber to uprate horsepower. In 1905 a Swiss Alfred Büchi invented the first supercharger driven by fumes. In 1925 he was the first man to connect turbocharging and fumes exhaustion which resulted in 40%more power. This pioneering step is evolves till today. In the beginning of the 1960s superchargers started to be mass produced in the American car industry. The first turbo charged civilian cars produced on the mass scale were Chevrolet Corvair Monza and Oldsmobile Jetfire.
